The Roxy Reading Program comes to several Buckingham primary grade-levels where students get to practice their reading fluency with licensed therapy-dogs. As a way of “thanks” from two Buckingham students, Skylar and Finn Gash (Third Grade & Second Grade, respectively) collected over $500 to donate to the Roxy Reading Program! Many children enjoy this special time with their classroom’s “adopted friend”. Thanks to all of the dog-owners, the therapy dogs, Roxy Reading, and to the Gash family for making this a special program for our Buckingham students!

Grief counseling with children through therapy dogs is an effective and heartfelt way to let grieving children “take a breath”, and stop thinking about the horrors they witnessed. A quote from a grateful teacher after losing a 2nd grader to cancer, the week after numerous RRTD teams visited the school; “Thank you all so much for the time you spent with kids. I am so glad that the children had something else to talk about besides the tragic loss of their young classmate.”

Ten select and specially trained volunteer therapy teams are now on-call, working with the Network of Victim’s Assistance and through the District Attorney’s Office, to  bring comfort to minors who are victims of serious crimes and abuse. Volunteer teams stay with the children on the days they must testify before a jury, a judge, prep for testimony, etc. most likely in the presence of their abuser. The children often relive the details of the crime in order to provide evidence in a case to prosecute the accused. Although not permitted into the courtroom, the therapy dogs are on site throughout the proceedings to provide comfort and a “safe space” for the children to relax.  Visits so far have been remarkably successful.
