Can my dog be a therapy dog?
This is a good first question and one that has to be answered objectively. Not every dog is suited for therapy dog work. The most important trait to identify in your dog is a gentle, calm and agreeable disposition. A dog with a great disposition can be taught a variety of behaviors, enabling them to become a happy and successful emotional therapy dog. It also takes willingness and commitment from you, the dog’s handler, to do your homework, train with your dog, and reinforce learned behaviors throughout your dog’s career.
Roxy Reading therapy dogs work in schools and at community events. During the summer, we often take advantage of other options for certified dogs; hospitals, nursing homes, crisis centers, rehabilitation centers, and the list continues to grow. As therapy dog interactions continue to reap remarkable results in those experiencing emotional, psychological or physical distress, so grows the demand for our services.
